Christmas at Chatsworth 2026

Discover the magic of Christmas at Chatsworth, where beautifully decorated rooms, twinkling lights and festive markets bring the season to life.

A Magical Festive Day Out in the Peak District

There’s something rather special about the Peak District as Christmas approaches. The villages begin to twinkle with festive lights, historic houses open their doors for the season, and there’s a wonderful sense of anticipation in the air.

One of our favourite places to recommend at this time of year is Chatsworth House, just a short drive from Top Riley. Beautiful at any time of year, Chatsworth becomes somewhere quite magical at Christmas, with magnificent decorations, festive traditions, beautiful gardens and a Christmas Market that makes for a lovely day out.

And perhaps the nicest part of visiting before Christmas is being able to enjoy all that festive excitement, then return to the peace and quiet of the countryside.

Step Inside The 12 Days of Christmas

This year’s Christmas theme at Chatsworth is The 12 Days of Christmas, bringing the much-loved Christmas song to life throughout the magnificent house.

Imagine wandering through beautifully decorated rooms, discovering a partridge perched in a seven-metre pear tree, delicate paper calling birds, leaping lords and twelve drummers, all interpreted with Chatsworth’s wonderful creativity.

But for me, part of the joy of Chatsworth is the house itself. The beautiful architecture, magnificent paintings, intricate details and centuries of history make it somewhere you can spend hours exploring. At Christmas, the decorations add another layer of charm to this already remarkable place.

It’s worth taking your time, looking beyond the Christmas trees and enjoying the history and craftsmanship that surround you.

A Little Christmas Shopping at Chatsworth Market

From 7th November to 13th December, the Chatsworth Christmas Market returns, with more than 100 stalls offering gifts, decorations, seasonal treats and artisan products.

There’s something lovely about wandering between the wooden stalls with the grand house and beautiful countryside as your backdrop.

Perhaps you’ll find a special gift, a handmade decoration for the Christmas tree or a little treat to take home. Or perhaps you’ll simply enjoy the atmosphere, with festive music playing and something warm to drink.

And if you enjoy browsing a good shop, the Chatsworth Stables Shop is well worth visiting too, with a wonderful selection of gifts, homewares and locally inspired products.

For those who like to make a day of it, there are also lovely places to stop for lunch, coffee or afternoon tea.

Winter Walks and Christmas Lights in the Gardens

It’s easy to focus on the magnificent house, but I always think the gardens and surrounding landscape are just as much a part of a visit to Chatsworth.

Even in November and December, when the trees have lost their leaves, there’s a quiet beauty to the gardens. Wrap up warmly, enjoy the crisp winter air and take in the views across the estate.

This year, Chatsworth’s Christmas garden experience includes an illuminated trail through some of its best-loved areas, finishing with a spectacular light and sound show projected onto the house.

The trail is approximately 2km long and is particularly beautiful after dusk, so it’s worth allowing plenty of time if you’d like to experience both the house and gardens.
